Sponsorship Packs and Fundraising online / offline
Sponsorship packs can be sent out to those wishing to fundraise for this event offline, alternatively we can assist you in setting up an online fundraising page (it is so easy!) to help us reach our goal – you then email the link to all of your family, friends, work colleages etc, put it on your facebook and away you go! Online fundraising is great due to the fact that no money needs to be exchanged as the transaction is taken care of on the secure website everydayhero.com.au and the donor is instantly given a tax deductible receipt via email. For those wishing to raise sponsorship for their walk/run offline – a pack can be sent to you along with a poster to put up at your home/workplace/school and on request we can issue you with a small or large donation tin to place in offices, staff rooms, workplaces, clubs etc. For more information on Sponsorship packs or Fundraising please call Emily Connor on 0410-032476. KinderChefs visited HeartKids SA at their new office and whipped up a Coconut Weetbix storm!!!
HeartKids and their siblings got their hands right into the mix of things and made their own cocnut weetbix balls for their ‘Sometimes’ food special treat!! They also read a great story about a giant cake and even held a coconut, tasted the milk from it and chopped it open!…. eventually!!! Good thing KinderChefs brought a hammer and a drill with them!!!

Heart Conditions - Detailed information for parents
Heart Disease & Pregnancy
Pregnancy is a time of increased risk, especially for women with a history of heart disease. The risks are manageable in most cases. Women with a history of heart disease need careful and more frequent medical observation during pregnancy. Because the risk varies for each woman, it is essential that you discuss your own situation with your doctor before getting pregnant. If you become unexpectedly pregnant, you should notify your doctor without delay so that the remainder of the pregnancy can be carefully planned and managed.
HeartKids Australia CEO wins National Award
These Awards are presented to outstanding leaders in Australia’s Not For Profit (NFP) and charitable sectors, recognising service excellence, enhanced organisational image and partnership success.
Neil started as HeartKids Australia’s first national CEO in June 2007 and has quickly brought focus and rigour to the NFP organisation, which was previously a loose collection of state-based bodies born out of the passion of a few families coping with all the emotions associated with having a child with congenital heart disease.

The Award was presented at a lavish ceremony at the National Gallery in Melbourne. Whilst the award acknowledges personal achievement, Neil prefers to see it as a great opportunity to promote his charity. With congenital heart disease being the most common birth abnormality and the greatest killer of children under the age of 5, Neil believes this award provides his young charity with a great opportunity to raise awareness of the alarming facts.
Most people I speak to are unaware of these facts, being more aware of the needs of cancer and adult coronary heart disease because of the financial capacity of the big charities to promote their cause. Each day 6 children are born with heart disease, over 2000 a year. These children fill half the beds in all children’s Intensive Care Units. Sadly around 250 of these children still succumb to the disease each year.
Neil says one of the great joys of his job is speaking to community groups and individuals about the needs of childhood heart disease.
HeartKids works to assist children and families who have been affected by Childhood Heart Disease and with corporate support is now funding much needed research in the hope less children will be born with these diseases and that mortality rates will decrease.
Dr. Gavin Wheaton HKSA’s First Patron
Extract from Chairman’s Report from 2008 AGM
It has been a very busy year for HeartKids SA and our achievements for 2007-2008 include;
• A fantastic turnout to the Annual Christmas Picnic, held in November last year at St Andrews School in Walkerville.
• Appointment of Kylie Bath into the Family Support Coordinator position as our inaugural employee, who has done a fantastic job of supporting our families both in and out of the hospital.
• Appointment of Kerry Southwell into the State Manager position, in which she has done a fantastic job in not only raising vital funds for the organisation, but raising awareness for children and our profile.
• Creation of the HeartKids SA Financial Assistance Fund to help ease the financial burden experienced by families who must travel to Adelaide or Melbourne for treatment. At this early stage this fund will be used to help subsidise some of the accommodation costs of these travelling families, but in the future we hope to grow the scope of this fund to cover many of the other cost that families must bear whilst their children undergo treatment.
• Launch of a new partnership with IKEA Adelaide who are hoping to raise $10,000 to assist families with accommodation costs through the HeartKids SA Financial Assistance Fund.
• The formation of an Events and Fundraising Sub-committee that were able to raise approx $30,000 over the last 12 months from a number of events that included;
o A Quiz Night, that was attended by over 150 people,
o A movie night to launch our new partnership with IKEA
o Various fundraising BBQs across Adelaide
o City-Bay Fun Run, with 169 participants sporting HeartKids t-shirts and caps that were proudly sponsored by IKEA.
• The coordination and execution of an intensive 3 day media campaign with HeartKids Victoria to advocate for the plight of the many families that were having their surgery cancelled due to the shortage of services at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne. I commend Kerry on the fantastic job she did in organising the campaign at such short notice, and I thank Lisa Guy and her family for allowing us to share her story as part of that campaign.
• Last but by no means least, the appointment of our inaugural Patron Dr Gavin Wheaton to whom we will be making a presentation a little later.
(Matthew Turner, Dr. Gavin Wheaton and guest speaker at AGM, Christie Anthoney)
Going forward HeartKids SA needs to work on the following to ensure that we are able to sustain the fantastic growth of the last 12 months;
• Revision of our strategic plan to account for our growth over the last 12 months and our planned growth for the coming year,
• The development of a Support Plan that not only outlines our support programs as of today, but what we envisage they will be in five years time,
• The expansion of our support services, to ensure that the same level of support is available to all families at all times in both metropolitan and rural areas,
• Build on the Financial Support Fund to enable its expansion to cover more than just the accommodation costs incurred by families that need to travel for treatment,
• Build on the fundraising success of the past 12 months, to enable the organisation to fund the planned growth for the coming year
• Review and update our Constitution to enable us to recruit people from outside our organisation to help us manage and grow the organisation.
City to Bay a Huge Success for HKSA
A huge THANK YOU to all of our wonderful HeartKids of SA City Bay Participants!!
I would like to acknowledge the Events and Fundraising Sub-Committee! Great job guys! Everyone loved the bags, shirts and caps! The balloons brought us lots of attention (which was the aim of the day!) and thanks to IKEA for their sponsorship of the shirts and caps too. We were very easy to spot in the crowd and it all contributed to a very successful day of ‘awareness raising’!
Also, many thanks to those who donated, made a fundraising web page, or gathered sponsorship from family and friends. As I send this message the online fundraising total stands at $15,179.65 – Amazing!! And that doesn’t include the cash donations yet to be totalled! And there are still donations coming in via http://www.heartkidssa.org.au and http://www.everydayhero.com.au/HeartKids_SA as well.
We had a total of 161 participants who entered the event for us.
Next year we aim to make it 300! A sea of people in our shirts and caps and double the balloons!
A great job by all!
A great day had by all!

HeartKids Christmas Cards
Lee Running the City Bay for HeartKids
The Stirling father of three, 51, has entered the Sunday Mail City-Bay Fun Run an impressive 33 times and cites his son’s heart condition, and other children with heart disease, as his ultimate inspiration. “If you are fit and healthy you’ve got to appreciate that because there are some people that are unable to do the full exercise,’‘ he said. His son Glynn, 19, has undergone open heart surgery three times since he was born and is currently recovering from a recent 7-hour operation.
As the board director of HeatKids Australia, Mr Morgan will join 20 to 50 employees, families and supporters at this year’s event. By entering a large team for the September 21 fun run, Mr Morgan hopes to raise awareness about childhood heart disease, a condition that is considered the greatest killer of children under five in Australia. Funds raised from their run will assist the support for families of Heart Children who are often unable or find it difficult to run themselves. “What we’re doing as a team is we’re running for kids who can’t run,’‘ he said. However, the Sunday Mail City-Bay Fun Run wasn’t always all about the kids for Mr Morgan, who has raced in every event since 1974 expect one. “I was pretty competitive in the early days,’‘ he said. “I used to take it super seriously and over the years I’ve just kept it up for myself and for the kids.’‘
His fastest time was 41.01minutes in 1986 when he finished 38th, followed by more than 10,000 other runners. Last year he made his best time in 10 years, which he says is thanks to morning routine. “The only way to keep fit is to have exercise every day,’‘ he said. ``I’ve only missed eight mornings so far this year.’‘ And with no plans to end his Sunday Mail City-Bay Fun Run commitment, Mr Morgan said he will only give up ``when my knees give out on me’‘.
Race director Joe Stevens praised the Sunday Mail City-Bay Fun Run for promoting the benefits of health and fitness. “Our aims are, of course, to encourage people to get out there for several reasons,’‘ he said. “One to improve health and fitness and to help establish a pattern of physical exercise with the City-Bay becoming the ultimate goal.’‘
The Sunday Mail City-Bay Fun Run registrations were launched last week with a record number of feet heading in the right direction. “We’re looking for a record year this year, we had 23,123 entries last year and we want to pass the record for participants,’‘ Mr Stevens said. So far entries have exceeded last year’s number with substantial numbers already entered in the first week.
So why don’t you join them – the entry form is on Page 62 or you can find it by logging on to adelaidenow.com.au
LEE Morgan might be a bit slower on the track these days but his motivation continues to out-run his fellow participants.

Latest Update - HKSA’s Heather Round crowned Australia’s ‘Mother of the Year’
MOTHER-of-six Heather Round not only looks after her own children but also helps the families of children with congenital heart disease.
On Thursday 8 May, at a lavish presentation in Sydney, Mrs Round, 35, was named Barnardos’ Australian Mother of the Year. In 2002, she lost her son Max, a twin to Henry, 5, to Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome when he was just 13 days old. Children with the disease typically have to be treated in Melbourne. Mrs Round decided to set up an accommodation support network, Max’s Place, to support families facing the financial burden of living for up to six months in Melbourne. “We would have loved to be able to cure congenital heart failure in kids but, because we can’t do that, we thought we would help the families,” she said.
“She’s Wonderwoman,” Mr Round said. Tim said Heather was a devoted mother. “Her life is about our kids and everything else is second to that,” he said. She was nominated by her mother Judith Parkinson who said Heather always had put others first. “I think she’s great and she probably should spend more time on herself, but the kids always come first,” Mrs Parkinson said.

Max’s Place
Max’s place are a group of three units that Heather & Tim Round have purchased in dedication to the memory of their son Max – these units are for the use of families that have to relocate to Melbourne for life giving surgery for CHD children. Max’s Place is a one bedroom apartment, with a kitchen, living and bathroom, which is located directly opposite the Royal Children’s Hospital.
The apartments are located in the Royal Park Towers and has a security entrance. They also have car parking spaces for the families staying in the apartments to use.

Family Support Coordinator - Kylie Bath
I am a Pre-school/ Junior Primary teacher and most recently have been providing classroom support for children with special needs, their teachers, parents and carers. I have watched HeartKids change and grow over the last few years and am very excited to now be involved in such a special way. My 5 yr. old son Cameron is a HeartKid, has had surgery twice and is now fit and healthy (most of the time) and has just recently began school.
I will be visiting the hospital during out-patient clinics and would love to see any of you who may be there, staying on the wards, or in ICU at any time. As the FSC, I also organise coffee mornings once a fortnight at the WCH on the Play Deck, level 1. Please feel free to join us for a relaxing time with myself and other HeartKid families. Hopefully I will soon become a familiar face for you to catch up with, have a chat, a coffee and to provide support and friendship for Heartkids and their families

Innaugral State Manager Announced for HeartKids of SA
My name is Kerry Southwell and I am thrilled to be part of the HeartKids of SA family. I have worked in the non-profit sector in Fundraising and Marketing for the last 15 years, predominantly working for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
I feel passionate about HeartKids of SA as I believe it is the ‘voice’ of our gorgeous babies and children with heart disease. Therefore, my vision for HeartKids of SA is to secure funding so that we may offer the support mechanisms needed for our babies, children and their families.
I want to ensure that HeartKids of SA programs are strong and delivered where most required. Also, I want to ensure that the needs of each family member who supports a child with heart diseases’needs are met. I would like to see more support for our families who live in rural areas as currently, about 25% of HeartKids of SA members live in country South Australia. Other areas that will be addressed are: a) more support for our teenagers b) obtain funding for more support to our babies, children and families who have to travel to Melbourne. (HeartKids WA attract annual state government funding initially for this reason.) I also plan to implement a media campaign and to visit service clubs and business networks to assist in lifting the profile of HeartKids of SA.
Our hard working Fundraising Committee is organising a Quiz Night in May, so I look forward to meeting a lot of you there!
My door is always open and I’d love to hear from you. My Mobile is 0420 363 155 or email
