HeartKids Awareness Month- February 2012

“Six babies are being diagnosed with Childhood Heart Disease every day”

February is HeartKids Awareness Month, when Australians will be encouraged to support Australia’s little battlers – those struggling with Childhood Heart Disease (CHD).
The month of February brings Valentine’s Day, why not celebrate by helping a heart in need? Here are some ways to get involved and support HeartKids in February!

Capture a Heart on Facebook
When you see a heart in your everyday life, enter the photo via the HeartKids Facebook page and you’ll be in the running to win some fantastic prizes. The ‘Capture a Heart’ competition runs from the 23rd January 2012 until the end of February go to https://www.facebook.com/HeartkidsAustralia for more information.
Rundle Mall- Awareness Display

Help us raise awareness!
On Tuesday February 14th (Valentine’s Day) HeartKids SA staff and Volunteers will be hosting a display for HeartKids South Australia in Rundle Mall across from The Myer Centre. Please pop in and see us!

Buy your Valentine’s Day Flowers and Make a difference!
One of Adelaide’s most prestigious florist’s Alyssiums on Pirie are showing their support to HeartKids SA by donating $5.00 for every dozen roses purchased. Place your order or phone 08 8223 4033!

Wall of Hearts
During the month of February, customers can dedicate a heart at participating Retail Food Group outlets, such as Donut King, Brumby’s and Michele’s Patisserie. Write a message of love and support to those suffering with CHD and stick it on the ‘Wall of Hearts.’ A collection of these heart messages will be sent to CHD sufferers in hospitals Australia-wide. Participating outlets will also promote HeartKids Combo’s throughout the month of February: Michele’s Patisserie will offer a heart-shaped lamington and coffee; Donut King will offer heart-shaped donuts, while Brumby’s will offer special Gingerbread Men. A percentage of all sales from these combos will be donated to HeartKids. For a list of participating stores go to http://www.heartkidsaustralia.org.au .

Heartkids at The Whimsical Markets

HeartKids are excited to announce we have been chosen as the charity of choice for the Whimsical MarketsThe Whimsical Markets are a great family market with a focus on baby unique band childrens items.

City to Bay Fun Run – 18th September 2011

This year’s City to Bay was another huge success with close to 900 particpants! Sincere thanks to everyone that participated on behalf of HeartKids SA- Your support will ensure we can continue to provide support to many families across South Australia.
To date, HKSA particpants have raised more than $45,000 with more expected to come!

We would like to sincerely thank IKEA for their amazing support and our incrediblel team of volunteers for all of their hard work before and on the day of the event.

First Aid Training Sessions

HeartKids SA are holding first aid training sessions, run by St Johns, for immediate family members with a child with heart disease or those expecting a child with heart disease (you must be a member of HeartKids SA – membership is FREE).
The sessions are at no cost to members of HeartKids SA.

Teen Camp – held in January each year

After this year’s incredibly successful Teen Camp we anticipate demand for places at next year’s camp to be strong.
The 2011 Camp was held on Milson Island in Sydney – an extremely well appointed camp in an idyllic environment located on the Hawkesbury River.

Tiny Tickers Ball

The first ever HKSA Tiny Tickers Ball was held in February 2011. 300 people attended and celebrated being young at heart whilst also raising $60,000 for HeartKids SA.

School Holiday Fun at The Beachouse

Monday 18th April 2011 saw a wonderful gathering of over 70 children and their parents for some fun at The Beachouse at Glenelg. Our families enjoyed an hour of climbing, sliding, boating, riding and more, followed by a relaxing barbeque on the lawns with a visit from Patch the Lion. It was great to see so many HeartKid families together to enjoy the start of the school holidays and Easter. A special thank you to all of the HKSA and Kiwanis volunteers that were involved in the day.

Mother’s Breakfast

We had 40 seats available for this year’s Mother’s Breakfast and were astounded how quickly those seats filled! We are looking forward to celebrating the special bond of mothers of heart kids and angels and hope that in 2012 we will be able to share this with even more people.

GLOW DISCO!!

HeartKids SA held a Glow Disco for HeartKids, their siblings and friends at Klemzig on 15th July 2011. Over 40 children attended the school holiday event. Special thanks to Footsteps Dance Company, GAZA Football Club and everyone who’s time & generosity went into this fun event for our kids!
